It is the start of a new year! What sort of year will 2016 be for you?
Our hope is that this year will be one of success and plenty! The first few weeks of the new year are always so beautiful. Holiday cheer is still in the air, and New Year’s resolutions abound. It is a time for a clean slate and a new start! The question is, what are you going to change this year that will make this year be your breakout year? We have got some great tips to make this year a year to remember!
It is a new year. 2015, for better or for worse is behind you. If there are changes in your life and finances you want to make, there is no better day than today to start! Take time to reflect on your strengths and weakness from last year. How did you do on your resolutions from last year? What was your favorite moment of last year? What was the worst? Dollars and cents aside, it is important to take time to reflect on the journey that life is. You accomplished a lot this past year, and life isn’t easy! Be proud for making it through another year and start the year off with your head held high.
Make a plan and write it down:
I have said it before and I will say it again. You need to have a plan for success. Vague goals for the new year will not get you very far unfortunately. Goals such as: “I want to save money this year” , or “I want to get in shape” are so open-ended, how would you possibly know if you accomplished them? Make achievable, SPECIFIC targets. If you want to save money this year, great! how MUCH do you want to set as your goal? Saying I am going to save $5000 this year is much more rewarding than saying I will save money, and you will know exactly when you have achieved your goal! Stay tuned, because we are going to be posting articles on how to have a savings plan for the year, so start thinking about what your goals are.
Make a point to read more:
My personal investments have really taken off over the past few years, and I can tell you with
100% confidence, the change occurred when I started reading investment books each week. There are so many fantastic books focused on every component of wealth and finance you can image. Does reading that many books get expensive? No! It can actually be very cheap, and very easy to do! I use Amazon kindle to buy digital versions for just a couple bucks. You can then easily read the books you buy on any computer. Several of the amazing books that I read this year include: The Chose yourself guide to wealth, A Beginners Guide to Investing, The Intelligent Investor, The Little Book of Common Sense Investing, and several others. How much did I spend on all these books this year? Roughly $20. For the price of two movie tickets, you can have an entire years worth of books at your disposal.
Stick to it!
Life happens. Unexpected expenses and setbacks happen to all of us, no matter how well we plan. The important part is to stick with your plan, and adjust as needed to keep your goals in sight. I like to keep a journal for how each month is going for me financially. It really helps encourage me in my “down” months, because I can look back and say wow, I really felt down in August, but then out of nowhere things got better and September was great! We are not trying to become millionaires overnight. Our goal is to plan and work towards financial security and stability. There will always be times of plenty and times of scarcity. The most important thing you can do is keep your eyes on the prize work towards your long-term goals. Do not get discouraged when things are tough, because that is when we grow the most.
